Leo Appel

Violinist Leo Appel performs as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe and the US. He is the winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Julius Isserlis prize, the Prix de Festival Ravel, Schiermonnikoog Festival’s audience prize, and the Countess of Munster Trust’s Peter Cropper award for most outstanding string player.

He appears regularly with Denmark’s Esbjerg Ensemble, is a New Ensemblist with Arcangelo, and has collaborated with artists such as Vilde Frang and Nicolas Altstaedt. As a soloist, Leo has recently performed with Kammerorchester Basel, Oxford Philharmonic, and Sinfonieorchester Basel, winning the Soloist award at the Musik-Akademie Basel for his recent Berg Violin Concerto. Leo is a keen artistic director and has led large-scale projects from the violin, including Bach’s St Matthew Passion. He also founded an ensemble specialising in Judeo-Spanish, Arabic and baroque music. A graduate of Cambridge and the Musik-Akademie Basel, Leo has performed at Wigmore Hall and Kings Place, and appeared at festivals including IMS Prussia Cove, Marlboro, and Yellow Barn, with broadcasts live on BBC Radio 3. He is looking forward to his upcoming North American tour which includes concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress.
