Programme 2026

IN THE COMMUNITY II: VOLTA BRÄU

Join us for a drink and music at Volta Bräu, Voltahalle’s neighbour, where you can meet and hear some of the musicians from this year’s festival. In a short, relaxed concert we'll bring you music ranging from the Beatles to Casals, all in the fun atmosphere of the Volta Bräu brewery. Chamber music isn’t just for concert halls, and this evening will give a window into what’s in store the following days.

OPENING NIGHT: BETWEEN SHADOWS

In collaboration with renowned cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and acclaimed soprano Anna-Lena Elbert, 'Between Shadows' brings together music from across four centuries and is framed by George Crumb’s visceral Black Angels: 13 Images from a Dark Land. In an unbroken narrative, the three sections of Black Angels are interspersed with Vivaldi, Beethoven and Tavener, inviting us to hear these pieces in a new way.

FEVER DREAMS

Shaking, flying, whirling, dancing - feverish dreams take over VOLTA Kammermusikfest with an evening of John Adams and Beethoven. Shaker Loops unfolds like an incantation as seven string players create hypnotic and shimmering textures. The string quintet arrangement of Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata (with an additional bass) concludes the evening, and the reimagination of this sonata brings the richness of the score to life in a new light.

LATE NIGHT: forbidden rituals

Percussionist Augustin Lipp and pianist Ryan Jung join forces in a new composition - a continuous and minimalist work that re-examines liturgical elements of spirituality through improvisation, reverberant acoustics, and electronics. Forbidden Rituals aims to break the separation between audience and performer by placing them directly inside the sound of the instruments, encompassing elements of ancestral storytelling traditions. In the purest sense, litany becomes the antiphon of breath and sound coming together.

FINALE: THUS THE NIGHT

A nocturnal musical landscape of many colours awaits. Following a series of reflective works by Schnittke, Poulenc and Messiaen, the programme centres on two French masterpieces by Dutilleux and Faure. Ainsi la Nuit's restless, fragmented soundworld is set against Fauré's Piano Quintet No. 1, whose soaring melodies and rich harmonies bring the festival to a close.
